Books in language

Welcome to the ILF's Community Publishing program. This program is all about you, your stories and your language.

The Community Publishing program

This program supports you and your Community to make your own books with your own language. These books can either be just for your Community (non-commercial) or can be sold to the public (commercial).

Community Publishing

Team

Who We Work With

We work with Indigenous Communities that are considered remote, very remote and isolated. We do this by working with organisations like schools, FaFTs, KindiLinks and other playgroups, language centres, social and justice groups, sports groups and many others. We have worked with Communities all across the country – and we hope yours is next.

What We Publish

We publish books that are written by Community, for Community – so this means you’re in charge. Whatever ideas you have, we're here to listen and to help you bring your thoughts to life. Examples of the kinds of books and stories we have made include:

  • traditional stories
  • a fun adventure that happened in Community
  • a tour of Community and what makes it special
  • a song book
  • a poetry collection
  • a collection of short stories
  • and more.

What Do You Need?

How we help really depends on your Community’s needs.

Sometimes Communities come to us and they already have the words and the pictures, but want some help turning them into a book.

Other Communities have an idea but don’t know how to start making a book, so we organise for authors and artists (either a local artist of your choice, an ILF Ambassador or one of our team) to come to Community and run workshops to help create the story and the art for the book.
So, if you’d like to work with us it doesn’t matter what stage your project is up to, we can help you do the rest.

How We Work With Language

Literacy in First Languages is important, and we want to support you in creating essential language resources. Including your language can be done in many different ways, depending on what your Community wants.

It could be a book completely in language, like Nhä Nhunu Nhängal or Narmankol.

It could be a bilingual book with both language and English on each page, like The Moon Story or Moli Bin Git Stak.

It could be a book that is mostly in English with a few language words, like Where’s My Minya Marlu? or No Way, Yirrikipayi!

Community Translation program

This program allows you to translate an already existing book into your language. We currently have 6 different books to choose from. Click on the button below to find out more.
