Publishers and Booksellers

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation is a national charity of the Australian Book Industry.

Publishers

The ILF is supported by the Australian Publishers Association, the Australian Booksellers Association, the Australian Society of Authors, and the Children’s Book Council of Australia.

The publishing sector is a major pillar of support for the ILF, providing support in the following ways.

Donations of books and resources

Many publishers around the country contribute thousands of culturally relevant, age appropriate books to the ILF’s Book Supply program.  These books are either donated or provided at heavily discounted rates.

Hosting ILF’s Create Initiative

A mentorship program initiative involving a group of Indigenous Community members with their teachers or Community elders who visit Sydney to create, write and illustrate a story.

Every year we work with a publishing house where they host and help the students over the course of a week to bring their story to completion with a published version of the book.

Other ways the Book Industry supports the ILF

  • Prominent publishers, authors, and book industry figures serve as ILF Ambassadors, raising awareness and encouraging others in the industry to participate.
  • Publishers and Booksellers around Australia by using their platforms to amplify Indigenous voices and promote Indigenous-authored works.
  • The Book Industry supports ILF by attending events like the ILF's hosted Trivia Nights, or hosts their own events to fundraise and raise awareness of our programs.

Be part of our Bookseller story

As a bookseller, you are part of a vibrant community that champions stories, literacy and connection. Partnering with ILF is a meaningful way to extend that passion to support the literacy requests from remote Communities to provide books, resources and opportunities that reflect their cultures, languages and stories.

"It's inspiring to see programs like Book Supply and Book Buzz continue to grow, reaching more Communities and supplying more books each year.

We are proud to support the ILF and look forward to continuing this vital work of supporting reading, language and storytelling."

Here’s how your bookstore can make a real difference:

Collect donations at checkout

Invite customers to donate with every purchase. These small contributions quickly add up and if you keep your donation ask at $1 no receipt is required keeping admin to a minimum.

Just $1 a day from your local community can help us get more books into the hands of kids in remote Communities throughout Australia. Donation of a percentage of sales from Love Your Bookshop Day in October – an annual celebration of everything that makes local bookshops special — from knowledgeable staff and handpicked book selections to fun events that bring authors, readers, and stories together.

Set up gift wrapping for good

Offer gift wrapping in exchange for a gold coin or small donation via a QR code to ILF. It’s an easy and impactful way to give during peak gifting seasons.

Display a QR code for donations

We can provide you with a ready-to-print QR code so your customers can donate directly to ILF with a quick scan from their phone — perfect for your counter, wrapping station or front window.

Host a fundraising event

Create a moment of community and raise awareness by hosting an event. Some ideas include:

  • Book-themed trivia night
  • Storytime fundraiser for kids
  • Raffle
    Silent auction
    Author talk
  • Partner with local artists or schools for a celebration of language and storytelling.

We can help with event ideas, promotional materials and support.

Sell ILF-published books via Pan Macmillan

ILF publishes beautiful books created by incredibly talented remote Communities — many are bilingual. These titles are available through Pan Macmillan for retail.

Stocking these books in your store supports our Community Publishing program and helps amplify First Nations voices.

Ask your Pan Macmillan rep about ordering ILF titles.
