Kaziw Students Lend a Hand!
What an amazing week in Sydney!
Eight talented students from the Torres Strait Islands took over the board room at Penguin Random House to write and illustrate a beautiful and very funny picture book.
And they did it in just 3 days!
Harold Needs a Hand is all about a rubbish-hating pelican who gets caught in a fishing net.
It contains hilarious characters (including a forgetful turtle, a seagull with verbal diarrhoea and a dugong with low self-esteem) as well as some wonderful messaging on caring for the environment and working as a team.
The students arrived armed with a great idea and turned it into a brilliant book.
They did this by developing the characters and mapping out a storyline that tied up all the important themes at the end.
Under the watchful eye of legendary ILF Ambassador Ann James, they created the most stunning artwork that makes every page ‘pop’. The
colours and illustrations are truly striking.
Faced with the super-tight schedule the students had to work extremely hard, but also managed to have some fun along the way.
Activities included visits to Taronga Zoo and Madam Tussauds, a talk from Bondi Rescue’s Maxi, and a professional crab eating exhibition by the ILF’s Tictac Moore!
Congratulations to Brian, Shan, Jerry, Natara, Shaun, Ezzy, Sam and Arona on becoming first time authors - we could not be prouder of you.
It was also fantastic to have Kaziw teachers Katijah, Ben and Uncle Frank there to support the students both inside and outside the
classroom.

Everyone is going to love Harold Needs a Hand - the drawings are extraordinary and the characters are a hoot!
