Indigenous Literacy Day (ILD) is an annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ Stories, Cultures and Languages.

ILD is proudly presented by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation - a national charity of the Australian book industry - that gives access to books in language for remote First Nations Communities across Australia.

On Wednesday 4 September, we’re celebrating the theme Be A Proud Voice for Country with a free FILM and LIVESTREAM event. 

We’ll be sharing some of the deep and diverse ways children, Elders and families connect with Country; and the significance of Country in Aboriginal Communities.

THE FILM

Join us as we take you on an exciting journey into three First Nations Communities across Australia. 

Julie and Patricia from Cunnamulla

We’re visiting Cunnamulla in Queensland, Vincentia in New South Wales and the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory. We’ll be sharing stories, cultures and languages in a day featuring many Proud Voices.

Vincentia High School Students 

You’ll learn about Dreaming stories from the riverbank in Cunnamulla; join teenagers as they explore culture through poetry and art in Vincentia; and hear incredible stories and songs from children and Elders on the Tiwi Islands.

THE LIVESTREAM

The live event follows our FILM and takes place at Sydney Opera House, hosted by ILF Ambassadors and superstars Jessica Mauboy, Bianca Hunt, Gregg Dreise, Josh Pyke, Justine Clarke and Andy Griffiths! It’s a celebration of music, dance, art, language and storytelling.

This is an action‑packed, joyful showcase; sharing stories, cultures and languages. It's an engaging and thought‑provoking adventure for early learners, primary students and adults.

HOW TO WATCH 

At 10.30am AEST on 4 September, the free FILM premieres (meaning, it is available online for the first time), automatically followed by a free LIVESTREAM from the Sydney Opera House. 

The FILM and LIVESTREAM will be available to watch on demand from 11.30am AEST on the same link, so you can watch it any time on the same link, at your convenience.

Note: If you are running late or tune in slightly after 10:30 am AEST, you can either continue to watch live from where the stream is at or pull back the timeline to the start at the beginning.

HOW TO REGISTER

To watch the FILM and LIVESTREAM you will need to register. 

Indigenous Literacy Day will be livestreamed from the Sydney Opera House website and registrations are free and open now for early learners, primary students and adults. 

Once registered, you will be sent a link that will become available to watch on Wednesday 4 September at 10.30am AEST.
